Off-the-shelf products from well-known vendors are used to solve customers needs. Product selection is requirement driven and shall be effordable. In addition connectability for production and engineering purposes is important. We do not like fieldbus connection in this cases. Therefore problems in the years to come are avoided, switching from physical to virtual machines will be much easier. Also engineering becomes simpler and help to avoid unnecessary expenses. 

Your investment shall last for years. A slightly conservative approach might help, switching to most recent products add risks you don't want or even aware of yet. New does not automatically mean better.
